Volunteering at Mennonite Village
 

Volunteering enriches all those it touches, benefiting both the giver and the receiver.
 
Each month, over 100 volunteers extend a helping hand and a caring heart through our Hands & Hearts Volunteer Program.
 
These volunteers serve in one or more of the following ways:
  • Facilitate games
  • Assist with arts and crafts projects
  • Perform music
  • Staff the gift shops
  • Visit residents one-to-one (reading, letter writing)
  • Lead Bible studies
  • Make pastoral visits (additional training provided)
  • Provide wheelchair rides for residents
  • Assist with laundry, kitchen, maintenance, and grounds keeping

 To be a volunteer, you must:
  • Be at least 11 years old
  • Complete an application
  • Have an interview with the volunteer coordinator
  • Provide references
  • Attend a 2-hour orientation session
  • Complete paperwork for criminal background check (if age 16 or older)
  • Allow Mennonite Village to perform a tuberculosis skin test (if necessary, due to the nature of your assignment)
Current Opportunities to Serve at Mennonite Village as a Hands & Hearts Volunteer
 
Gift Shop Attendant
Staff gift shop which serves visitors and residents at nursing home or assisted living facility. Proceeds are used for employee educational scholarships.
 
Group Activity Assistant
Assist staff or other volunteers in group or one-on-one activities with residents in a nursing home, special memory loss unit, or assisted living facility.
 
Laundry Helper
Fold sheets, spreads and other items used in the nursing home, transport barrels of dirty linens to the laundry area, deliver clean supplies to storage cupboards.
 
Maintenance Assistant
Work with Grounds or Building Maintenance staff to do yard work, building repair/upkeep, room set-up/tear-down.
 
Personal Services Assistant
Work with a Certified Nursing Assistant to provide assistance to nursing home residents who need help with basic personal care (worker will not be able to perform duties which require certification), and provide one-on-one social interaction. Fingernail painting, making beds, offering beverages (with additional training from nurses), passing food trays.
 
Pastoral Services Assistant
Sunday worship services: assist residents to and from service, lead music, play piano. One-on-one visits with residents, read, pray, sit with residents through the dying process (additional special training provided). Assist with Bible studies or singing events.
