Tobacco-Free Workplace

As part of our mission to provide life-enriching services, Mennonite Village is dedicated to enhancing the health and well-being of our residents, employees, and visitors.

On November 19, 2009, Great American Smokeout Day, we proudly joined with other health and residential care providers throughout the nation and created a tobacco-free workplace for the benefit of those who live at, work at, and visit our campus.

We are committed to improving the health of the workplace and those we serve each day. By making our Village tobacco-free and offering encouragement and support to those who enter tobacco cessation programs, we are addressing the number one health risk today.

Who is affected by the tobacco-free policy?

Mennonite Village employees, visitors, and vendors are affected while at any Mennonite Village facility or Mennonite Village grounds. Mennonite Village residents are not included in the tobacco-free policy.

When was the tobacco-free policy implemented?
November 19, 2009.

What is prohibited by the policy?
Use of all tobacco products, including cigarettes, cigars, pipes, chew, all forms of smokeless tobacco, clove cigarettes, and other products made primarily with tobacco.

Where can I go to use tobacco while I'm on Mennonite Village property?
If you plan to use tobacco products, you must leave Mennonite Village property, including buildings, parking lots, structures, and open spaces that are owned by Mennonite Village. Please be respectful of our residents and neighbors by taking your trash to a receptacle and washing your hands upon returning to a Mennonite Village facility. If you need clarification on property boundaries, please contact Mennonite Village Human Resources or Facilities (541-928-7232).

Is smoking in one's car allowed since it is personal property?
Yes. At this time, smoking is allowed in one's car.

Isn't it a person's right to use tobacco?
Tobacco is still a legal product for adults. Mennonite Village will not force anyone to stop using tobacco. The new policy reflects Mennonite Village's commitment to an environment that is in the best interest of the health and well-being of our employees, residents, and visitors.

Are there any designated smoking areas for employees, residents, and visitors on the Mennonite Village campus?
Residents may use the designated smoking area at Quail Run Assisted Living. Employees, vendors, and visitors must refrain from tobacco use on our campus.

How is the policy enforced?

This policy is regularly enforced. Our standard procedures to monitor compliance and violations will be in effect within all facilities and across the campus. We expect all Mennonite Village employees and visitors to comply with the policy. Additionally, employees are encouraged to assist in maintaining a tobacco-free environment by helping to ensure everyone is aware of the policy.

What tobacco-free services are available?
Local support is available through Samaritan Health Services classes, local community classes, and telephone and Web support.
