Mennonite Village in Albany, Oregon announces the opening of Mary's Place—a non-profit, adult foster care home for men and women of all faiths diagnosed with early stages of Alzheimer's disease or related dementia.
Most people diagnosed with early stages of Alzheimer's and related dementia would like to remain in their own homes as long as possible. However, sometimes it becomes too difficult to do the everyday tasks of life, even with the help of others. Mary's Place adult foster care offers the benefits of specialized care and services in a home setting.
Mennonite Village, a non-profit continuing care retirement community, recognized a growing need for affordable Alzheimer's and dementia care in recent years. In 2009, they approached the State of Oregon Department of Human Services about establishing a special foster care setting on their campus with experienced staff and operational support. Mennonite Village was granted a license to operate Mary's Place in March 2010.
The Class II foster home was designed specifically for this purpose. It can accommodate five residents and personnel. Mary's Place is staffed with a specially trained resident manager and caregivers who share a knack for interacting with those with memory loss. An on-call registered nurse is also available 24/7 to provide medical care.
"We were able to reuse a building, which saved a great deal of time and expense," remarks Dave Detweiler, facilities director at Mennonite Village. "We converted a row of smaller homes into a spacious, five-bedroom home with two bathrooms, a full kitchen, a large living and dining area, and an office for around-the-clock staff."
"The building fits this purpose so beautifully," adds Mary Scott, administrator of Mary’s Place who also manages Mennonite Village's Alzheimer's and dementia care at Lydia's House. "Each resident will have a private bedroom and 24-hour access to common areas in which they can socialize and participate in housekeeping, cooking, and other daily activities and outings as much as they wish.”
Mary’s Place is part of the Mennonite Village continuum of care. For information about Mary's Place, contact Mary Scott, administrator, (541) 928-7232 ext. 407, or Nettie George, care manager, (541) 704-1085. |
